What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is not only for athletes or sports people, anyone can benefit from the treatment. Sports Massage is mainly used for improving short and long term injuries. The therapist will use specialist techniques to manipulate the injured muscles and tendons to fully restore it’s integrity.

Benefits

We all love that post massage feeling. Your mind is clear and your body is relaxed. But regular massage can benefit you much more. Eventually, your recovery time will speed up, scar tissues are repaired, range of motion is increased, your concentration is sharpened and stress is gone.

What happens?

The highly experienced therapist will focus on breaking down adhesion’s or scar tissue to increase range of motion and repair damaged muscle. The specialist techniques used are mainly muscle energy technique (MET), deep friction massage, ice massage and soft-tissue release (STR).

Heal Faster With Sports Massage

How does Sports Massage work? It can help to soften the superficial and deep muscle fibres by using different strokes such as ‘effleurage’ which targets the superficial layer increases muscle temperature and increase flexibility. ‘Petrissage’ to stimulate blood flow and removes metabolic waste. ‘Deep-friction’ massage which targets the deeper muscles to reduce inflammation, promotes greater nerve activity and breaks down scar tissue.

Why choose sports massage at SMSM? Dharam Vyas studied Applied Sports Science at Southampton Solent University, who became very passionate about the effects of sports massage on reducing pain and encouraging flexibility. This led him to complete a diploma in Soft Tissue Manipulation and Corrective Exercise. Upon completing the course, Dharam’s passion for sports massage therapy led him to engage with many individuals suffering from acute and chronic injuries. He gained wider knowledge about different conditions and improved his ability to treat them effectively. His experiences have led him to provide a bespoke service to not only treat the condition but to teach the patient about their conditions and injury prevention too.

What does the research suggest?

A 2010 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that even a 30-second massage improved hip-flexor range of motion.

Sports massage therapy is reported to aid recovery by rearranging tangled muscle fibres and providing elasticity to the damaged tissue (Benjamin and Lamp, 1996).
