What is Sports Taping?

Sports taping is also referred to as kinesiology taping. It is widely used by sports injury experts for multiple reasons including; injury management, injury prevention and promoting faster healing.

Injury Management

Taping is applied on individuals with both chronic and acute injuries on symptoms including; medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints), ankle sprains, knee instability. After a particular injury, the muscles can be weakened, ligaments can be damaged and joint capsules may become loose, therefore stability is important to help regulate normal healing.

Sports-Event Preparation

Sport can demand individuals to produce high degrees on joint or muscle motion, therefore an injury prone area must be restricted by kinesiology taping to maintain the integrity of the muscle and prevent further injury.

Stabilise Your Weak Areas

What is Sports Taping? Sports tape or kinesiology tape is a thin, elastic strip with an acrylic adhesive that is applied directly to the skin. The purpose of sports taping is to maintain joint stability, support weak muscles and reduce inflammation. Individuals suffering from an injury or preparing for a sporting event can benefit from taping.

How does it work? Once applied, the adhesive glue allows the taping to stay on the skin for up to 5 days. During this time, the thin tape adds a layer of support over the injured or prone to the injury area. The application encourages the lymphatic system to increase blood flow and maintain fluid balance which is one of the main requirements of reducing inflammation. Although it was first designed for sports people, non-athletic people can also benefit from the taping. Many people usually get injured by falling or twisting their ankle. This can be very painful and can even loosen joints and tissues permanently. The taping is applied very specifically on the area to shorten or lengthen the joint space or muscle, this, in turn, will increase flexibility and prevent re-injury.

Why We Use Sports Taping?

Before SMSM Therapy uses or endorses any product, it is trialled and tested multiple times to ensure utmost patient satisfaction. Through the regular use of sports taping, it has exceeded our expectation on the benefits you can gain for the application. Sports taping is a tool that can be used after another treatment such as deep-tissue massage or spinal manipulation because it is in conjunction with many conditions that are treated with those treatments. However, it can be applied without prior treatment. The particular conditions it can help are whiplash, frozen shoulder, shoulder impingement, rotator cuff tear, bicep tendonitis, poor posture, shin splints, sciatica, piriformis syndrome, ankle sprains, tendon strains, plantar fasciitis, lower back pain and knee pain.
