SMSM Therapy is a private sports injury clinic in Bromley, three minutes’ walk from Shortlands station. We assess and treat musculoskeletal problems: the injuries people pick up playing sport, the ones that build slowly from a desk or a steering wheel, and the old complaints that never quite settled.
What a sports injury clinic actually does
People sometimes assume a sports injury clinic is only for athletes. In practice most of who we see are not competing at anything. They are runners with a knee that complains on hills, office workers whose neck has seized, parents who lifted something awkwardly, and people in their sixties who want to keep playing tennis without paying for it the next day.
What makes it a sports injury clinic rather than a massage parlour is the order things happen in. We start by working out what is wrong. Only then do we decide what to do about it, and the answer is usually a combination of hands-on treatment and exercise rather than any single technique.
How your first appointment works
Your first visit begins with a consultation, not a treatment couch. We take a full case history: what happened, how long it has been going on, what makes it better or worse, what you have already tried, and what you actually need to get back to.
From there your therapist assesses how you move, and where it is relevant carries out a posture analysis to identify asymmetries that may be feeding the problem. Treatment follows, usually combining two or three of the approaches below, and you leave with an exercise programme so the change holds between appointments.
Quoted appointment times include that consultation and time to change, not just the hands-on portion. If we think the problem needs a GP, a scan or someone other than us, we will say so.
